Juli and Ben’s Wedding at The Grand Concourse

“We’re getting married to daddy today!!!”

Juli and Ben’s three-year-old daughter, Lily, sort of grasped the idea of a wedding. This was a special wedding since her parents were getting married. But when she was asked what special event was happening, she answered “we’re getting married to daddy today.”

Juli and Ben met when they were working together a few years ago. They have been raising their daughter together and decided to make their relationship official earlier this month.  They were married in a small intimate ceremony with their immediate family at the Grand Concourse in Station Square. Live piano by Ron Soltis set the mood for this romantic event.

Juli has been my best friend for more than a decade, so I was beyond honored to capture the best moments of her day. I hope you all love seeing the happiness of Juli and Ben’s wedding!!

Congratulations on your first shoot. These are absolutely beautiful! I wish you many many weddings. They will be lucky couples to have you capture those precious moments.

Kimmy and Chris’s Wedding at St. Bonaventure and The Heinz History Center

One of of the first things that I learned about Kimmy and Chris was that they attended rival universities. Kimmy went to Penn State and Chris attended The University of Pittsburgh. There was talk of Pitt and Penn State pom-pom gloves at our first interview. While this is a point of jovial teasing between them, it was more of a humorous binding agent than the reason to start a feud. Being that their wedding day was a joining of their lives, they chose to join their collegiate lives together with a PEP RALLY! Kimmy, a former PSU cheerleader, was joined by the Nittany Lion and led the guests with chants of “We Are State!” “Let’s Go Pitt!” and “WE ARE–MARRIED!” I hope it isn’t the last wedding I attend with a pep rally.

Kimmy and Chris are strong in their devotion to their religion. Both had told me they were most excited to exchange vows on their wedding day. They were married in a Catholic mass at St Bonavenutre Parish in Glenshaw and celebrated their union with a reception at The Heinz History Center in downtown Pittsburgh. An excellent team was assembled for their wedding day. Lee Ann from @home beauty styled Kimmy and her bridesmaids’ hair and makeup. Eric from Party Time Productions guided their guests through the reception (and pep rally) after they enjoyed catering by Common Plea Catering.

Nicki and I enjoyed the first weekend in April with Kimmy and Chris. She met with Chris at St. Bonaventure in the most wonderfully fragrant church we’ve ever been lucky to step into. Kimmy mentioned that the church would still be decorated from Easter celebration, but it was more beautiful than I had imagined. After the ceremony, we were treated to beautiful weather and their lively and energetic reception.

Congratulations, Kimmy and Chris!

My guess is there were no losers at this pep rally challenge. As usual, great photos, I really like the ones at the church.

Teaching for Fox Chapel Area Adult Education

A lot of people ask me what I do during the off-season. Well, this business owner has a ton of things happening! First, wedding season doesn’t really end until mid-November and then there are tons of Christmas orders to fill. When those things slow at the next calendar year, I make some improvements and plans for my business and get to work on client albums. I definitely take a lot of time to relax and catch up with family and friends and even do a bit of traveling. By the time I finish those and get ready for the next wedding season, it’s here!

But sometimes the low season can be a bit too lonely. I thought that teaching photography would be something I might want to do in the future, so I decided to give it a try at the community level. I had taken some language learning classes through Fox Chapel Area Adult Education and I thought this was the perfect venue for me to give it a try.

It has been a joy to instruct this class. The program director for Fox Chapel Area Adult Education, Sue Goodwin, is a great resource and such a hard worker. She handles student registration, payment, liability waivers, organization and even helps me by making the photocopies I handout in class.

We are half way through our semester and I am enjoying sharing my knowledge about photography. I like to think about photography in two ways–as a technical craft and an art form. Sometimes a photographer’s job is to make decisions about what is happening in the camera on a technical level to communicate an artistic vision. It’s silly to say “my camera takes good pictures” when you should be saying “I take great photographs!” It has been gratifying to hear student comments like “I didn’t know my camera could do that!” I like to remind them that the camera has a computer for a brain. Preparing for the classes has also solidified a few finer points for me–I’m always learning!

Below are three photos from class. Wearing a sombrero is normal behavior for the first lecture, right? Photo by Rich Dembski.

The photo below was used with permission from Jaqi Conomikes

And this final photo was taken during the lecture portion of the class by Ryan Voss.

Sorry that I couldn’t take the full course and only attended the first class but God for saken Wyoming had called. I enjoyed myself and learned a few things in the lecture. You do understand that having owned the camera for 8 years and never having opened the owners manual could not possibly be a reason for not knowing what some of the butons and dials are for. Tomorrow is Wednesday and I dread missing class.

Rich DembskiApril 2, 2013 - 21:28

Ps I was honored to have made one of three photos having only attended only one class. Sure doesn’t hurt to be a dad either. Also the photo of you was direct lighting on the left with soft lighting on the right achieved by takeing the photo from stage left of center.

JillApril 12, 2013 - 23:31

Hey Randi! Great post. I love the shot of you in the sombrero! I am sure your students are benefiting from your vast knowledge and unique perspective.
